The craftsman design style was created in the early 1900's to allow the middle class to live in beautiful places. The style began in California, but has been popularized throughout the country, with the most popularity in the midwest. This style is defined by more natural materials such as brick, wooden detailing, and built-in shelves. In contrast to many other styles, Craftsman designs center on the human-scale and smaller living spaces. Exposed wooden beams, white painted brick, and central fireplaces all have a place in this style. Another important aspect is natural lighting, which plays a large part in lighting the interior.
